Green Revolution
The first Green Revolution in India during the 1960s and 1970s increased agricultural production significantly with the use of high-yield seeds, fertilizers and irrigation. It has transformed India from an importer into a net exporter of food.
Green Revolution 2.0 will bring together technology, entrepreneurship and policy innovations to address the food security of 1+ billion people, as well as environmental challenges of today.
COSTA RICA
Forest Conservation
Since facing one of the highest deforestation rates in the world in the 1980s, Costa Rica has more than doubled its forestry. The catalyst is a 1996 Forestry Law, which banned deforestation and introduced an innovative Payments for Environmental Services programme.
The law recognised that forests provide vital services and established a mechanism to provide an income stream to farmers and rural landowners for maintaining or restoring forests.
BRAZIL
Energy Security
For half a century, Brazil has been powering a quiet energy revolution with biofuels that made farmers pivotal players in the energy transition. The National Alcohol Programme (Proalcool) launched 1975 coupled incentives for setting up ethanol plants with mandatory blending of between 10-20% ethanol into the gasoline being used in all road vehicles and aircraft.
The policy stimulated billions of dollars in private investment, cut oil import bills, improved energy security, and reduced Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions by 70-90% compared with gasoline.
GUYANA
Farming Insurance
Guyana has instituted an innovative parametric weather-risk insurance for all 6,000 of Guyana's rice farmers. It pays out automatically when rainfall, river levels or wind speeds cross predefined thresholds. This eliminates the need for on-ground assessment of losses, and allows enrolled farmers to get immediate assistance to recover and rebuild.
Piloted in the mid-2010s with support from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF), the World Bank and local cooperatives, the scheme became fully operational in 2025.
